Today Pete forwarded an email that contained an unimaginable raptor observation count for Hawk Ridge in Duluth:
Day’s Count: 22419
Month Total: 27714
Season Total: 28381
Species sighted were: Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Northern Goshawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, and Swainson’s Hawk.
Total observation time: 10.25 hours
Conditions: wind west 3-14 mph, temp 36-61, sky partly to mostly cloudy
Raptor Observations: flight ended abruptly at 1500 (CST)

Non-raptor Observations: 1544 non-raptors included 24 Lapland Longspurs – common to the Arctic tundra, 10 Horned Larks, 1 Dark-eyed Junco, 924 Blue Jays, 1 Winter Wren, 13 Rusty Blackbirds, 14 Northern Flickers, 9 Bobolinks, 60 American White Pelicans, 16 Sandhill Cranes, 1 American Golden Plover, 1 White-crowned Sparrow, 45 Yellow-rumped Warblers
The Swainson’s Hawk sighting is particularly interesting, as this is a migration from North America to Argentina. Also, the Lapland Longspurs have arrived all the way from the Arctic. We’ll be heading up to Hawk Ridge this weekend.
