[...] Here and here, in what turned out to be somewhat of a series on the economy, I mentioned that those who have been hurt the most in this crisis are those who aren’t self-reliant, as well as those whose income sources aren’t diversified. Pensioners, employees, single income households, all take serious hits with declining markets, lay-offs, and adjustments. While Pete and I are fortunate in that we don’t have a lot to lose, we empathize with those who are still in shock from the combination of precipitous drops in the investments and housing sectors. We all want to feel less at the mercy of conditions we cannot control.
Thank you for sharing such a personal story.

I like how you identified having diversified talents as a tactic for surviving the economic crisis. I have been working on this and hope it helps me should economic trouble knock on my door.

Hi Cath - thank you so much. Time - and it has been 21 years - is the healer. Nobody's gonna die over a market crash, that's for sure. I think not thinking about it is a good partial strategy - ignore the doomsayers. You've been doing great work lately! We're gonna talk about that and more!

Hi Brett - thanks for coming by. From what I've read, I know that your strength has arisen partially from loss as well. It'd be a good topic to explore sometime on its own. We're so happy to have you join in the conversation!

Betsy,

I agree with Cath - I feel for you, I know that loss, and I admire your strength.

I will be reading your upcoming work carefully - we need more people thinking like you, spreading the message of self-reliance and interdependence.

Thank you for the words of inspiration.

Brett

OMG Betsy - what a brilliantly written post. How awful for you to have lost your son. But still, you're managing to stay positive and influence others to do so, despite this crash.

I have not yet given too much thought to how to cope with the recession. To be honest - I try not to think about it too much, although I know that's not ideal either. Now I'm working at home again, I'm probably going to sell my car. Stuart has a company car anyway. And I don't really drive much right now, as the medication I'm on makes me drowsy.

But I'm looking forward to your advice in the future posts you mentioned.

Oh - and I owe you an email. I have not figured out how to put flags on posts I need to reply to in gmail yet.
