A NEW WAY TO PLAY FOR LITTLE DAISY

by Betsy Wuebker on March 11, 2009

europe-2002-595Daisy plays serious ball

When we met homeless Daisy for the first time at the dog pound, her sole possession was a mini tennis ball. When we brought her home, we quickly discovered someone had taught our new little friend to fetch.

Daisy takes ball-playing seriously.  Any ball – even an oversize softball she doesn’t have a prayer of dominating. She will bring it to you, drop it and stare – willing you to play.  If you tell her it’s out of reach,  she will push it closer to you with her paw.  You’ll be charmed into throwing it for her.  Then she’ll bring it back and do it all over again. It’s an irresistible and notable trait.

daisyresizedDaisy is a pretty darn perfect dog!

My previous dogs have always been large, sloppy, Marley-type Labradors.  Now I am a small dog convert.  Most anyone who sees Daisy for the first or the hundredth exclaims and coos.  It’s something about that friendly, puggish little face.

Daisy can be a great source of entertainment outside of ball-playing.  She gets along with everyone and there’s always room for her.  In fact, last summer we overheard a teen-aged guest say, “This was the best grad party ever, and it’s all because of Daisy.”  Next time we won’t slave over the food!

Unlike lots of hyperactive little dogs, Daisy is unassuming and easy-going.  She’ll go along with just about anything, including being dressed in silly outfits and laughable hats.  She regularly seems to be on the receiving end of questionable and embarrassing wardrobe gifts.

Too much of a good thing, though, can easily devolve.  Daisy’s fixation with the ball persistence turns her most irresistible and charming trait into pestering.  That’s when we wish we had one of these:

Hey, that automatic ball flinger is a total hoot, not to mention an ingenious idea for dogs as well as tennis players.

All dogs are great. We have 2 small ones tho and they are especially portable, that is a big plus. Daisy is a dear, congrats on her rescue.

Daisy is adorable, and I love the stories about her. She reminds my of my dear departed Lady, who was also a pest at times. Lady was a cockapoo, a small dog. She liked to carry a tennis ball in her mouth on walks. I bought some tiny balls intended for cats, and she loved playing with them because they were light. She used to catch them on the fly if I tossed them to her.

She took a long time to learn fetch. In her mind, it was throw the ball, watch her get it, and then come and get it from her. After a long time, she finally realized she was supposed to give back the ball. Rather than bringing it to me, she would use her nose to roll it back to me. Her aim wasn’t great, but watching her do it was.

Hi Jannie – I never get tired of watching it, especially when the baby laughs! LOL I love all dogs, too, but as you say, portability is very cool. Thank you.

Hi Dot – Thank you. I’ve always thought cockapoos were great. Lots of interesting little mixes nowadays – everyone is going small. Funny how they get you to do what they want, isn’t it? Thanks.

We had one ball playing Shipperkey and and one enjoy your lap and ride in the car. They were such entertainment we did not need TV. And in their old age – wow could they bark and bark and bark.

What a cutie pie Daisy is and what a fun post!

I am happy to be pet free right now….feels just right
thanks for sharing :) left me with a smile

Hi Patricia – Oh, I just love Schipperkes or however you spell them. Pete will tell you I love every kind of dog. There has always been some kind of beast in our home for years, but I’m sure it’s liberating when there is not. Glad you enjoyed meeting Daisy. :)

What a cute dog Betsy. I don’t have any pets, as Joshua is allergic. It’s a shame, as he loves dogs.

That machine is awesome. It’s kind of like a giant pinball machine.

Hi Cath – It’s hard when family members are allergic. Some of Pete’s family can’t be around Daisy very long. They have a Shih-Tzu who doesn’t shed. Maybe Joshua could have a poodle or another non-shedder? Thanks.

Hi Lance – Ha ha, she knows it, too. Thanks.

Betsy,

I laughed so hard with the video!! I also loved what you wrote about Daisy. I’ve had dogs and all other sorts of animals all my life…couldn’t be without them.

When I was a kid, we had a Scotty who loved to play fetch. As we had grapefruit trees in our yard, Mac would find the sour grapefruits that fell on the ground and bring one to us to throw. He would chase after them, but could only go two or three steps before he had to put the grapefruit down. This didn’t stop him because he would always get it back to us! Then he’d wag his tail and beg us to throw it again! Persistence is a dog that plays fetch :~)

Hi Betsy. How adorable. Give Daisy a big kiss for me. I love dogs… especially the tiny ones. I used to own a poodle when I was a girl. I don’t think I’d choose one again though because they tend to be quite noisy. I loved her though — taught her lots of tricks. She would ride in my bicycle basket, up and down the country roads. :-) The video was hilarious!

Hi Davina – It’s great to see you! Hope your blogging hiatus is going well. Daisy likes to ride in the bike basket, too. My daughter has taught her lots of circus tricks. It’s fun when they do that, isn’t it? I would like a poodle mix to eliminate all the shedding! Thanks for stopping by – we miss you!
