Somerset Park Suanplu Bangkok serviced residences provide a “home away from home” environment which is enhanced by staff’s superlative “Heartwear” ethic.
Our Experience: When you travel as much as we do, you wind up in a variety of accommodations: hotel rooms, hotel suites with extra conveniences, AirBnB apartments both private and shared, even luxurious pool villas! We’ve often found ourselves wishing for a hybrid between the daily caretaking in a traditional hotel and the homelike convenience of a private apartment. Thus, we were excited to be invited to review the Somerset Park Suanplu Bangkok, part of The Ascott Limited world of serviced residences.
The Ascott Limited, a member of CapitaLand – one of Asia’s largest real estate conglomerates, is a Singapore-based company. It has grown from one international-class serviced residence in 1984 to the largest global service residence owner-operator in the Asia-Pacific, European and Gulf Region markets. Ascott’s global portfolio includes over 41,000 units in 90 cities across more than 25 countries. Over the years, the company has garnered global accolades ranging from Best Service Residence from TTG China Travel Awards, TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice, Top 10 and Top 25 Lists, and Business Traveller’s “Best” in several regions.
The Ascott Limited defines global living with three distinct service residence brands: Ascott (refined elegance and luxury), Citadines (vibrant flexibility and comfort for independent travelers) and Somerset (warm services balanced with a family-friendly focus). We found The Somerset Park Suanplu Bangkok complex, off South Sathorn Road in the financial district in Bangkok, to be ideally and conveniently situated in the midst of shopping, night markets, green space, entertainment, restaurants and many corporate offices.
The Somerset Park Suanplu is somewhat unusual for bustling Bangkok in that it is set back from the street with a large, private garden buffering the residence building from the bustling street noise you generally get in the city, as well as large-scale construction in other parts of the neighborhood. This is a deliberate transition into a tranquil atmosphere.
This green space is put to good use; there are serene water features, private places for relaxing, and play areas.
One night, we were treated to a festive barbeque organized by staff for residents with music, drinks and even traditional Thai dancing (in which we self-consciously participated)! What a fun opportunity to get to know the management, staff and residents! This definitely personalized our experience. Check out the video below for a closer look at the fun and a brief interview with the Somerset Park Suanplu’s general manager.
Our spacious one bedroom deluxe apartment was contemporary and welcoming, with entry foyer and u-shaped full kitchen (even a washer-dryer!) open to the large combination living and dining space. Zoned air-conditioning for living area and bedroom meant that we could keep things at separate comfort levels for working and sleeping. Cable television and entertainment systems were present in both living room and bedroom. There was ample desk/table space for two digital nomads to spread out comfortably.
The bedroom was equipped with double built-in, auto-lit wardrobes (with steam iron and ironing board, hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers!), very comfortable king-size bed with quality linens and multiple pillows (so appreciated!). The walk-through bath with tub/shower combination boasted thirsty towels and generous amenities.
The nicest thing about the Ascott concept is the daily maid service, just like you receive in a fine hotel. The Somerset Park Suanplu took this to a higher level, though. Every day, our dishes were washed, linens refreshed, bath amenities and towels replenished, floors and surfaces rendered spotless. When we noticed a couple of very minor details in our apartment that needed attention – sticky bathroom and balcony doors – friendly engineering staff summoned via walkie-talkie arrived within minutes and swiftly attended to the issues.
Daily breakfast was part of our room package, and the Somerset Park Suanplu restaurant provided a wide variety of buffet-style choices to suit western, Thai and Indian palates. We could have cooked breakfast on our own, but why bother when such a perk is available? The convenience and plentiful choices were great!
Other services and amenities: Betsy enjoyed a relaxing facial treatment at the onsite Heavenly Day Spa. Van and tuk-tuks are available for free-of-charge trips to the nearby BTS station and the Silom shopping complex.
The sheltered swimming pool, tennis court and fully equipped workout and aerobics room are first-class. For business purposes, the wireless high-speed Internet in the apartment and public spaces worked seamlessly. Reception staff graciously printed and faxed a document, and then emailed us a confirmation.
The boardroom and other meeting-appropriate public spaces have comfortable appointments. An on-site activities concierge can arrange a variety of local experiences for guests. Room service – full meals and light fare – is available, as well as a 50-page catalog of restaurant free delivery options. We joked that we’d never even have to leave the building if we didn’t want to with all these conveniences.
Favorite Details: We loved feeling at home in our spacious apartment, which felt enormous by comparison with a typical hotel room. The privacy and separation when one partner awakens earlier than the other is something you don’t get in a hotel room, either. All the coffee we cared to drink from our electric kettle made for happy morning campers, too.
The Ascott Limited’s signature “Heartwear” customer service ethic is remarkable at the Somerset Park Suanplu, even for Thailand where service is elevated to extremely high levels. We were always remembered with wide smiles, our needs were anticipated unobtrusively and accommodated swiftly. We were even recognized and greeted by the activities concierge between trains at a station several stops away from the hotel during her rush hour commute. Details like this made us feel like long-term residents, as opposed to newcomers in town.

Our Rating: ***** (5 out of 5 stars) It would be lots of fun to stay at the Somerset Park Suanplu Bangkok for a long time. We felt welcome, cared about, and cared for, which made for a truly remarkable stay. While the amenities at Somerset Park Suanplu are comparable to a typical four-star hotel, we are awarding five stars because of the outstanding service and genuine warmth from every staff member.
Disclosure: Two out of the four nights we stayed at the Somerset Park Suanplu Bangkok were complimentary, with breakfast provided. The additional nights, meals and services were on our dime.
