We began traveling full time more than three years ago with a 2-month house sit in Fiji. Since then, we’ve returned twice for similar length stays. The perfect logistical jumping off point from our former base on Kaua’i, and the perfect place to relax and regroup from intense travel, this South Pacific island nation epitomizes paradise in many people’s minds. And, while it’s true that most of the time we’ve incurred zero accommodation costs due to house sitting, we’ve also discovered affordable places to stay in Fiji.

When people learn we’ve spent a lengthy amount of time in Fiji, many react by saying “Must be nice!” The implication is that Fiji is a very expensive destination which only rich people, which we’re certainly not, can afford. And yes, it can be, with any number of uber-luxurious resorts to empty your wallet. But did you know that at one of many affordable places to stay in Fiji you can spend a night in a lush tropical setting, with an ocean view and comfortable amenities? And would you believe you’d be paying about the same price as you’d pay for a branded hotel at an interstate cloverleaf on the U.S. mainland? Check our recommendations out!

In Nadi along Wailoaloa Beach

Wailoaloa is a half-mile stretch of beach in northern Nadi, a quick ride from the International Airport. This area is popular with travelers who plan to visit other parts of Fiji. They’ll take a room for a day or two and then catch their inter-island flight. Others stay their entire vacation here. It’s a lovely flat beach, great for strolling and swimming. Just off-shore, “yachties” anchor for shore leave, get provisions, and head to happy hour.

A lively, younger vibe with small swimming pool on the beach, unlimited free WiFi. Restaurant/cafe/bar is a great option for happy hour. Private with ensuite rooms and single beds in a dormitory room with shared bathroom options.

Reviews of Aquarius on the Beach
A small, simple, affordable hotel with a dozen rooms on the beach. Restaurant gets high marks. Easy transport to town and airport. A great place to stay if you’re headed to the Yasawas or in transit from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu.

Budget double room from $38, Standard double balcony view $42, Double with ocean view $59, Ocean view Suite $70, Bed in 8-bed Mixed Dormitory $9

Reviews for Oasis Palms
Set away from the beach in its own self-contained little world, Oasis Palms features balcony rooms, each with pool view, air con, and complimentary continental buffet breakfast. For lunch and dinner, on site Mamasake Restaurant features Asian-style tapas and excellent sushi. We’ve stayed here a couple of times and the service is impeccable. Double Room with Pool View $103 for 2, Bungalow with mountain view for 2 $70.

Tip: Book a memorable day cruise to the Mamanuca Islands from Port Denarau on a 100 ft schooner with snorkeling and glass bottom boat options, and included gourmet island buffet lunch. Click here for more information and pricing.

Adjacent to Nadi International Airport
Reviews of Fiji Gateway
Across the street from Nadi International, but still with a secluded, vintage feel and very little noise with ice cold air con. Rooms have been refurbished; site facilities include 2 restaurants, a bar and double swimming pools. Great for a rest prior to transferring to other islands or elsewhere on Viti Levu, or ahead of an international flight. Each time we have stayed here, we’ve received an unexpected, complimentary suite upgrade.

Tip: Tour the Temple, Mud Pool and Sleeping Giant Garden, where you’ll interact with locals and absorb a variety of spiritual and natural energies. Click here for more information and pricing.

Reviews of Tokatoka Resort
A long-standing tradition for folks in transit – the hotel is literally across the street from Nadi Airport but feels like a world away – or for extended stay visitors. Spacious rooms, atmospheric pool area, resort-style layout. Part of the Warwick Group of Hotels and Resorts.

Tip: Visit the famous Cloud 9 Floating Bar and Pizzeria on a day trip from Port Denarau. This is the epitome of floating paradise! Click here for more information and pricing.

On the Coral Coast between Nadi and Suva on Viti Levu

About an hour south of Nadi along the Ocean Road just past Sigatoka, the Coral Coast bridges an insulated experience one might find at high-end resorts with the “real Fiji.” Dotted with villages along its stretch of sandy beaches which are protected from the open ocean by a large, shallow reef, the Coral Coast is home to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park and the Kula Eco Park, which showcases South Pacific ecosystems.

Sunset Beach in Korotogo, Coral Coast

We recommend these two favorites along the Sunset Strip in Korotogo (about 10 minutes outside Sigatoka). Both are mere steps from the beach along the quiet shoreline road. It’s a quick trip into town for shopping by cab (about $10FJD/$5USD) or simply flag a local bus down from the roadside for a more authentic experience ($1FJD/.50USD):

Reviews of the Bedarra Beach Inn
Breakfast, lunch and dinner menu at the onsite restaurant and bar with live Fijian music overlooking tropical pool and ocean vistas. Daily happy hour from 5 to 6 is announced by local drumming. Standard double rooms with air con, deluxe balcony rooms, Superior King with Lagoon and Garden views.

Reviews of the Crows Nest Resort
Under new owners/management, this property has been spruced up and redesigned to take advantage of its hillside setting. We stay very close by and have visited the restaurant many times. Pete recommends the “Mixed Seafood Grill.” Large pool with deckside bar and restaurant. Split-level suites with ocean view for 2 or 4, deluxe villa with ocean for 2 or 4, pool-side Quarter Deck Bar and Restaurant.

In Savusavu on Vanua Levu

While most of our time in Fiji has been spent on its largest island, Viti Levu, we’ve also visited the second largest, Vanua Levu. Savusavu is a paradise within a paradise, long a favorite with sailors for its deepwater moorage. A quick flight on a prop plane from Nadi or Suva, Savusavu’s airport runway shares a narrow valley with grazing cows and the Hibiscus Highway. In town, you’ll find shopping, a variety of dining experiences and lots of laid-back local color.

Reviews of the Savusavu Hot Springs Hotel
In the heart of Savusavu, next to the Thermal Hot Springs. Overlooks Savusavu Bay. With open-air Mahi Bar and Takia Restaurant serving Fijian cuisine. Double air conditioned rooms with ensuite bath and ocean view.

Reviews of the Daku Resort
On a former coconut plantation, Daku offers traditional Fijian cottage and villas with views of Savusavu Bay. Certain units have full kitchen and private pool Yoga classes, massage services and dive excursions are available. Full restaurant on site. Options: three-bedroom cottage,, two-bedroom villa with private pool, four-bedroom cottage with pool view.

Reviews for the Korovesi Sunshine Villas
Spectacularly sited on 2 acres of mountainside tropical gardens outside of Savusavu, Korovesi Sunshine villas feature a secluded outdoor pool, smoking fast WiFi (the owner is German and would accept no less than perfect internet access), and free airport transfers. While it’s a walkable distance to town, you may prefer to arrange for their driver to taxi you up and down the steep hillside to this property. Each unit has a full kitchen, with laundry pickup and delivery.

Fiji is a country that I would not have thought of for long term stay but I can see why you go there. We've been quite a few times especially when our girls were young....It's an easy trip from Australia and the Fijians are fabulous with children!enjoy your stay!
