Entrepreneurs Monika and John Mundell thought they were happy, but a lifestyle change which let go of what they loved gave them their dreams.
John and Monika Mundell will be the first to tell you it’s not always easy to make a lifestyle change. Over the years, the two European chefs had worked hard to build a dream life in suburban Australia. When Monika decided to make a career change, John’s employment supported them through her start-up phase.
Once Monika’s new career reached stability, John transitioned away from his job into back office support. While they loved to travel, they told themselves keeping their beloved menagerie of 11 birds happy and healthy at home was a more important priority.
“We thought we were happy, but there still was something missing. We realized we had to let go of certain things that we loved to get the things that we dreamed. We don’t want to forego our dreams; we want to live our dreams.”
Even if you’re making the lifestyle change to do the things you’ve always dreamed of, there is usually something else that needs to go to make room. In our conversation, recorded last fall, John and Monika describe the steps that led them to a dramatic lifestyle change that now has them traveling the world on luxury cruise ships. When they disembark in a new location, they’re spending about 25% of what they formerly spent in suburbia.
Since our interview, we all have moved to different locations. John and Monika went on a couple of Caribbean cruises, sailed through the Panama Canal and are now living in Chile, cooking up a storm in their rented apartment in Santiago.
