The Greek islands are well known for their beauty, as well as their sun-and-sand appeal and abundance of cheap holidays. One place in particular that’s widely held as one of the most breathtaking islands is Kefalonia, and it’s not hard to see why. This glorious island was immortalised in the book, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, and featured heavily in the blockbuster film too. But as any visitor to Kefalonia will tell you, this Greek island is much more than just a pretty face.
As the largest island in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia has plenty of room for diversity. It’s home to mountain villages, bubbly seaside resorts and chic, polished towns with oodles of charm and character. Head inland and soak up its spectacular mountainous terrain which is peppered with ancient ruins and pretty Byzantine monasteries, or enjoy the diverse character of its fabulous towns. Fiscardo is a lovely place that’s surrounded by lush greenery, centred around a bustling port. Then there’s Skala, an attractive town that was once a small fishing village and still reels in the catch of the day, while its Blue Flag beaches provide a lovely laid-back spot for families and sun-seekers. The old town of Skala is a blend of ancient and modern, which is home to fabulous Roman ruins, contemporary nightspots and chic boutiques.
There’s plenty to do on holiday in Kefalonia. Aside from sampling the daily life of the island’s towns and villages, there are plenty of historic sights to experience – such as the spectacular and ancient Cave Lake of Melissani, close to Karavomilos village. Here you can follow an underground path before climbing onto a boat which takes you into the cave, where archaeologists have excavated various treasures dating back to the 4th and the 3rd century BC.
Kefalonia might not be the place for cheap holidays, but if you’re looking for a visually stunning holiday with a difference, this spectacular Ionian island is well worth it.
