An Emerald Waterways European river cruise would be our first, ever!
Pete doesn’t yet know he wants to go on a European river cruise. But when we win the Jewels of the Rhine Cruise with Emerald Waterways, he’s going to be their biggest fan! After me. 🙂
Both of us have long thought a river cruise might be something we’d do “when we’re older.” Even though we’re classic river cruise industry demographic (empty nesters age 50-70, with time, resources and travel experience), we’ve never seriously considered it. Until now.
Why Not Cruise Before This?
Short answer: fear. Cruise ships are huge, floating cities with over the top party-barge hoopla and superficial excursions. European river cruise, different fears: claustrophobia, lack of amenities, fewer options, no unscheduled time, elderly co-passengers.
Yet, we keep hearing that a river cruise is great for exploring fascinating history and culture. You’re conveniently docked, close to sightseeing and activities (fewer transportation woes!). Everyday hassles are minimized because someone else attends to logistics (no unpacking and packing, either!).
Okay, Let’s Give River Cruising a Chance, But Who is Emerald Waterways?
Emerald Waterways is a new arm of Australian-owned Scenic Tours, well-established in the river cruise industry. Scenic’s owner, Glen Moroney, envisioned a destination-based, four-star experience along Europe’s iconic river itineraries. Emerald Waterways would differentiate itself with thoughtful inclusions to appeal to experienced travelers, along with perky on-board amenities to draw a young-at-heart crowd. We can relate!
We Don’t Need a Bigger Boat, Just a Better Boat
Emerald Waterways has a surprising number of unique innovations in its custom-built fleet. Lots of glass makes for a comfortable, airy atmosphere with just the right amount of relaxed, spacious luxury:
Heated swimming pool? Check.
Generously-sized staterooms and suites? Check.
Under 200 passengers? Check.
Sky Bar? Check.
Horizon Bar and Lounge? Check.
Reflections Restaurant? Check.
Evening cinema, hairdresser, fitness area, massage therapy, putting green and sun deck? Checkity, check, check, check.
And there’s connectivity! No wi-fi is a deal-breaker for location independents like us, or vacationers who still need to quickly monitor business, social media, and email. When we travel, our page fans are inspired by the day’s photos and commentary. We’re really good to go with Emerald!
Why We’re Going to Love Our “Jewels of the Rhine” Cruise
While the “Danube Delights” trip was tempting (we so love Vienna and Budapest), we’d choose “Jewels of the Rhine,” new for 2015. This is the Europe of storybooks and dreams, where you have one foot in the present and the other back in time.
Arriving in Amsterdam is going to be easy with many airfare choices. The Welcome and Captain’s Gala Dinners on the first two nights will be fun, too! New friends with unlimited wine, beer and cocktails! We are there!
We know there is much more to Europe than we’ve seen so far. From our river-view cabin, we’ll come to understand why cruising its scenic waterways is the “fastest growing segment of the entire travel industry.”
Just the right amount and variety of experiences are included in the trip itinerary: guided tours of Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz, Rudesheim, Mannheim; a Black Forest cooking lesson; and kitschy attractions like Germany’s largest cuckoo clock. We like Emerald’s focus on UNESCO Heritage sites; with Emerald PLUS options such as a day trip to historic Heidelberg, we can ramp up more activity, if we want.
But wait! Emerald Waterways adds even more value: all meals; airport transfers; tips and port charges (big savings!); complimentary wine and beer with meals, soft drinks, tea and coffee.
For The Win!
Why are we the best pick to win this contest? We’re the perfect demographic match, and we “get” Emerald Waterways.
