Famed for its beautiful beaches and white expanse of beaches, the Maldives is known as paradise on earth, and has some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty in the world.

Holiday-makers arrive at the Maldives by seaplane, making for quite a unique start to the trip! With fantastic diving facilities and first class luxury, the Maldives has proved extremely popular with newly weds and honeymooners.

Sights such as North Atoll have also proved extremely popular with divers, so whether you’re a seasoned diver or a tentative beginner, be sure to check out these fantastic sights during your Maldives holidays.

Banana Reef

A beautiful, marine area that has become an internationally protected dive site, Banana Reef is also known as the Maldivian Gaathugirl.

Home to some of the most rare and beautiful fish in the world (think Barracuda, Puffer Fish, Blue-stripped Snapper and the elusive Jackfish!) it is one of the premier dive sites in the world. The reef has become hugely popular with snorkelers due to the sheer variety and wealth of fish and plants, and the dazzling miles of colourful coral.

The fantastic views are not restricted to under the water, either: at the northeastern end you can find rugged coastline, majestic rock-faces, a wide expanse of white sand and naturally occurring sea caves filled with native Squirrelfish and beautiful rock formations.

At the western end of the dive site, hop in a jetty and watch the schools of grey reef sharks swimming just under the surface.

One of the most unique aspects to holidaying in the Indian Ocean are the atolls: tiny islands usually inhabited by one small resort, or a couple of water villas: beautiful luxury villas are built on stilts and sit directly over the blue lagoon. With first class luxuries including marble en suites, IPod docking stations, MAC computers and designer furnishing, they are a home away from home: one you may never want to leave!

Badminton

If you’re the sort of person who prefers to keep your feet firmly on the ground, then don’t forget to hit up the famous badminton courts.

Good for one or two games, (the heat can be a bit much) it’s a fantastic way to inject some easy activity into your stay and get the blood flowing. Great for those who are not too keen on the sea, or those just looking for a bit of variety.

Tips for Trip Success

Book Your Flight
Find an inexpensive flight by using CheapOAir, a favorite of ours because it regularly returns less expensive flight options from a variety of airlines.

Book Your Hotel or Special Accommodation
We are big fans of Booking.com. We like their review system and photos. If we want to see more reviews and additional booking options, we go to TripAdvisor.

You Need Travel Insurance!
Good travel insurance means having total peace of mind. Travel insurance protects you when your medical insurance often will not and better than what you get from your credit card. It will provide comprehensive coverage should you need medical treatment or return to the United States, compensation for trip interruption, baggage loss, and other situations.

The water villas look amazing – waking up over water like like would get anybody’s day off to a good start.

Hi Betsy .. I’d love to visit the Maldives … probably sooner rather than later … but that’s something that’s on a to do list where visiting islands is very low down! A good dream though …

I’d like to visit Hawaii too .. that’s more likely … but still way down the list … just got to get across England tomorrow after our storms … first hurdle! Lovely to see you over at the blog Cheers to you both … Hilary

Hi Hilary – It’s such a long way to go, it had better be spectacular! And it sure seems to be, doesn’t it? 🙂
