Our Top 5 Road Trips – U.S. and Canada
It's road trip season! When we were living on Kauai, the opportunities for a road trip were somewhat limited. ;-) Now that we're back on the mainland, we've taken a few others. But still, we recommend these as our top 5 favorites in the U.S. and Canada. The Road to Hana - Maui, HI - "35MPH never felt so fast!"
<a style="color: #0000ff; text-align: left;" Continue Reading
Looking Into Forever Part 2
Magical Moose Our recent trip to Minnesota's North Shore was an opportunity to reflect, not only on the past, but also on what the future might hold. We always do a fair amount of centering when we visit, and, like others who come to this magical place, return home reinvigorated and refreshed. This time around, though, there were many signs to associate with deeper introspection. "Regard heaven as your father, earth as your mother, and all things as your brothers and sisters." LOVELY LEELANAU
I spent a few days last week with my Uncle Jack, my late mother's oldest brother, at the tail end of a longer trip visiting family. Jack and his late wife retired years ago to Suttons Bay, in Leelanau County, Michigan. They had grown up sailing on Lake Huron out of Alpena. Grand Traverse Bay proved a fine day's outing on the water, as well as a peaceful easterly view from their new home. Both my Uncle Jack and my cousin Joan participated in sailing a two-masted schooner, the Continue Reading
A BIRD IN THE HAND
The huge bird counts that lured us to Hawk Ridge are no more. An east wind blows all weekend, pushing the migrants' highway further inland from Lake Superior. Still, birders galore flock to the main overlook at Hawk Ridge, and the raw weather does not stop the banding program. We all sit in the cold, peering up at the sky when the spotters call out. Sometimes we can see what they do, and sometimes not. It doesn't matter when there is a bird in the hand. Staff displays Continue Reading

MUNISING – A FINE FOREVER
If Grand Island is the head, and Munising's deep water harbor is the neck, then Munising itself is a rough-hewn, semi-precious necklace on a leathery cord. From wherever you might be along its grid of tree-named streets, your eye is drawn beyond the pretty face of its anchorage to the Big Water beyond. Nestled against what some say is the most perfect harbor along all of Lake Superior's shoreline, Munising is anything but flashy. Tough and self-sufficient, challenged by weather and an economy Continue Reading
