Barbecue Restaurants: Blues Band at BB’s Lawnside BBQ

By Betsy Wuebker 5 Comments

(Last Updated On: January 27, 2020)

Barbecue restaurants are a Kansas City tradition. Our second stop, BB’s Lawnside BBQ, on a recent road trip tour of several Kansas City style barbecue restaurants was an opportunity to hear a great local blues band.

BBsLawnsideBB’s Lawnside BBQ – We looked forward to enjoying the music of Lee McBee and the Confessors, a blues band that plays here every Sunday night. BB’s Lawnside BBQ is located on 85th Street in south Kansas City, a semi-industrial neighborhood that looks like it knows what the blues is about. Inside, family-style seating is punctuated with a few high-tops and space at the bar, all first come first served.

The real draw here at BB’s Lawnside BBQ is the music. Lee McBee’s raspy blues delivery is the perfect accompaniment to traditional Kansas City style barbecue, which is noted for its smoky sweet undertones. Good barbecue restaurants know how to complement the experience; Lee McBee showcases the versatility of the various members of his blues band during an entertaining set.

BB’s Lawnside BBQ was born 20 years ago when the owners began serving slow-smoked Kansas City style barbecue with traditional Louisiana cuisine such as jambalaya, gumbo and red beans and rice. We sat at the bar and ordered off a comprehensive amalgamation. Still full from lunchtime, I decided on a sandwich with coleslaw, and Pete got ribs. With the blues band playing, we were in exactly the element we were seeking on this road trip.

Overall rating: Great!

Tips for Trip Success

Book Your Flight
Find an inexpensive flight by using CheapOAir, a favorite of ours because it regularly returns less expensive flight options from a variety of airlines.

Book Your Hotel or Special Accommodation
We are big fans of Booking.com. We like their review system and photos. If we want to see more reviews and additional booking options, we go to TripAdvisor.

You Need Travel Insurance!
Good travel insurance means having total peace of mind. Travel insurance protects you when your medical insurance often will not and better than what you get from your credit card. It will provide comprehensive coverage should you need medical treatment or return to the United States, compensation for trip interruption, baggage loss, and other situations.
