Some of the things you may need to know include:

000 is the emergency number in Australia

Being in a foreign country can be daunting, and if something happens you can place a call to 000, Australia’s emergency line. Once you call the number, you’ll be connected to the police, fire department or ambulance depending on the emergency.

Cars drive on the left

The road safety varies from one country to another, and in case you rent a car while in Australia, remember to drive on the left side of the road. This might feel uncomfortable for travelers that drive on the right side at home. If you cannot get used to driving in the opposite direction, you can always hire a driver, take shuttle services or public transportation.

Don’t forget the sunblock

Australia can get very hot, and with a relatively thin ozone layer, the sun rays are harmful to your skin and can cause sunburn that lasts weeks. If you intend to go to the beach for some tanning, it is best you lather yourself generously with sunblock and wear a hat. Plus points for using eco-friendly sunblock that doesn’t harm the local coral population.

Australia is huge

Australia is one vast country and its size can be overwhelming. Of course, you’ll be spoilt for choice for the countless activities and destinations  but you should not underestimate the distance it takes from traveling from one part of the country to another.. Whether you pick one  destination or multiple ones for your trip, make sure you have enough time to tour it all.

For first time travelers to Australia, it is smarter to pick just a couple of destinations unless you want to spend most of your vacation time on the road. Plan your trip well if you want to avoid disappointment and make the most out of your visit.

A road trip is the best way to explore Australia

A road trip in Australia is one of the most authentic ways to experience the country: lots of nature, fun and unique experiences on the road and is very pocket-friendly. Rent a car or go on a group tour and to see hidden gems and great beach-side trails for the experience of a lifetime.

Look out for wild animals

Australia is well known for its diverse wildlife, from cuddly marsupials like kangaroos, koalas and wallabies to dangerous ones such as saltwater crocodiles, dingoes, box jellyfish and sharks. You do not, however, need to worry about dying at the hands of one since the chances of that happening are pretty low as long as you heed the warning signs. But remember to be careful and observe from a distance.

Know alcohol laws in Australia

As one of the world’s leading beer and winemakers, it is easy to see why this is on the list. The legal age to buy drinks in Australia is 18 with exception for 16 to 17-year olds who can drink beer, wine or cider with food and with an adult present. Drinking in public places is illegal which means no drinking at the beach.

Things are expensive in Australia

Life in Australia, especially the cities, can be rather costly, so budget well and be prepared to avoid any inconveniences. Trips to Australia can get rather pricey mainly due to the flights and accommodation. But there are ways to travel on a thrifty budget.

The best way to travel to Australia on a budget is by staying in Airbnbs and by traveling in a group. There are many communities of backpackers where you can meet other travelers to share a ride. Alternatively, you can go to places that are not tourist hotspots and are a bit more affordable.

Just like any new destination that you plan on visiting, there is so much to learn about Australia, before and during your trip. Make sure to do your research and stay alert about the things you are and aren’t allowed to do. Keep these things in mind and you’ll no doubt have a great time down under.
