If you want to experience the great outdoors when you go on vacation, there’s plenty of options for you. You could go hiking or trek to a variety of locations, but if you want to experience the great outdoors in a more tranquil fashion, why not consider a fishing vacation?

This is one of those things that may not appeal to everyone, but it’s a very unique way to get the family involved and start on your fishing journey. You don’t have to be a professional angler to enjoy a fishing vacation, but there are certain considerations that will make it a great experience.

Should I Go Charter Fishing?

Charter fishing is one of the best ways to go fishing because the company will do it all for you, and all you need to do is sit back and relax! The question is where you want to go. There are many great lakes where you can go fishing, but if you want to combine it with a trip into the blistering sunshine, there are many Miami fishing charters that you can try out. On the other hand, if you would rather be closer to home, you can go to one of the local lakes that allow fishing, but it doesn’t feel like a proper trip away. The best way to do it is to set up a charter vacation.

What to Do Before the Trip

To make your fishing trip a success, do your homework early on. Ask yourself what you want out of your trip. If you’ve never been on a fishing vacation, you may have an idea what you want to try. Perhaps there is a certain type of fish you want to catch or a location you’re interested in. Considering these aspects will give you a better idea of what you want to get out of your experience.

You may wonder how far you should go to reach the hotspots with the biggest fish. As the biggest fish live offshore, it can take some time to reach them. If you are happy to spend more time traveling to offshore locations, you can wait it out. If not, and you want to combine your fishing vacation with a few more family-friendly activities, a bay trip would be better.

How Important Is Fishing to You?

You may think that you should catch lots of fish, but what are you going to do with them? It’s always fun catching loads of fish, and you may want to bring a fish or two back to cook, but if you end up being a natural angler, you may prefer to catch and release, which is always a great experience.

Think about the time you want to spend on the water. Do you like the idea of spending a full day on the water, or is there a possibility you might get seasick? Do you want to bring children with you? If you want to bring your children with you and get them into fishing, you’ve got to get the balance right because they could get bored, or possibly get seasick. But you also need to think about the actual act of fishing.

Do you want to spend time reading in the fish and setting the hooks, and catching bait? Or would you rather spend your time relaxing on the waters and grabbing the rod when a fish bites? Additionally, if you are looking to improve your fishing skills, and other techniques that you’d like to try? If there are specific techniques, and you go on a charter fishing trip, you may have to work with the captain of the boat.

What Should You Pack?

When going on a fishing trip, it’s not just about packing the basics. The items you bring should allow for flexibility should the weather change. You’ll want to make sure your footwear is appropriate for balance and slip prevention on the boat. You’ll also need to keep yourself hydrated and fed. For all of these things, bring layered clothing, rubber-soled sneakers, and ziplock bags for your valuables, and a cooler for your food and drinks, not to mention a cooler for the fish you catch. Double check with your charter to see what they’ll provide.

A fishing trip is not just a great way to spend time on the water with the people you care about, but it is physically exhausting. Also, being out in the open air can leave you very sleepy. After your trip, make sure that you rest. You may want to spend some time out and about, but try to do it on a different day.

A fishing vacation is one of those things that we don’t all consider, but it can be a great way to learn how to fish that can bring us closer, whether to our family members, to the water, and everything in-between!

Tips for Trip Success

Book Your Flight
Find an inexpensive flight by using CheapOAir, a favorite of ours because it regularly returns less expensive flight options from a variety of airlines.

Book Your Hotel or Special Accommodation
We are big fans of Booking.com. We like their review system and photos. If we want to see more reviews and additional booking options, we go to TripAdvisor.

You Need Travel Insurance!
Good travel insurance means having total peace of mind. Travel insurance protects you when your medical insurance often will not and better than what you get from your credit card. It will provide comprehensive coverage should you need medical treatment or return to the United States, compensation for trip interruption, baggage loss, and other situations.
